Small Trees for the Garden

Trees form the bones of our gardens, yet many people don’t have the space for massive trees. There are many wonderful small trees that fit the scale of the average garden and the space we may have available if we want to add to a garden with existing trees. Following is a list of some of our favorites.

Acer griseum

Paperbark maple has wonderful, chestnut colored bark that peels off in thin sheets like paper. The green leaves have silvery undersides and turn bright red in fall. This tree gets to about 25' with a narrow, rounded crown.

Acer palmatum 'Beni kawa'

This is the new and improved coral bark maple. The name means red skin or red river. The bark is a coral red color and is especially visible in the winter when the leaves have dropped. Leaf color is yellow green, turning yellow in the fall. The tree is about 20' tall.

Acer palmatum dissectum 'Seiryu'

This is an upright laceleaf maple. In spring the green leaves are tipped with red, then change to a light green. Fall color is gold streaked with crimson. Trees can get as tall as 12'. The name means pure stream.

Acer palmatum 'Moonfire'

The leaves of this tree are purple-red, turning crimson in the fall. This is a strong, upright growing tree that may grow as much as 3' during a season. It generally gets to 12-15'.

Acer palmatum 'Osakazuki'

Acer palmatum 'Oshio Beni'

The spring leaves on this tree are bright red changing to maroon. In shade the foliage tends more towards green. In mid-summer the leaves become green-red or bronzed and in fall they turn bright red again. The name means red press. This is a smaller tree, 9-12' tall.

Arbutus hybrid 'Marina'
